Lake Bunyonyi is where gorilla trips exhale. After the steep trails of Bwindi or Mgahinga, a night beside still water among terraced hills is the best kind of rest. The lake is about twenty-five kilometres long, sits at roughly 1,960 metres and holds around twenty-nine islands. Its name is often translated as the place of little birds, and that suits it.
How much time do you need
One night is enough as a stopover. Two nights let you canoe, walk and bird without rushing, and they make a useful gap between treks. From Mbarara it is roughly three hours by road, so it also works as the first night of a southern circuit. Our 7 day western Uganda itinerary places it between Bwindi and the drive home.
Canoe among the islands
A guided dugout canoe is the signature activity. Paddlers glide through papyrus edges where herons, kingfishers and weavers feed, and stop at small islands with lodges, craft stalls and viewpoints. Go at sunrise or late afternoon for soft light and calm water, and ask your host how long the paddle will be. Wear a hat and sunscreen, and keep your camera in a dry bag.
The islands and their stories
Several islands have names and histories. The one known as Punishment Island is where unmarried pregnant girls were historically left, a sobering part of the lake's past. Guides share the story with care, and visitors can see the island from the water. Other islands host guesthouses and viewpoints, so ask your host which ones they recommend.
Birding
More than two hundred species have been recorded around the lake. Early morning paddles and shoreline walks are the best way to find them, and the lake pairs well with forest birding in Bwindi. Read our Uganda birdwatching guide for a wider route.
Walks and village visits
Footpaths climb through terraces with wide views. Gentle walks suit rest days, and village visits introduce local farming life. Buy crafts directly from makers, and ask before you photograph people.
Swimming and safety
Many visitors swim from lodges. Because freshwater health advice varies, check the guidance from the CDC (opens in a new tab) and ask your lodge which places they use. Ask for life jackets before you board a canoe, and wear them.
Kabale town
Kabale is a cool highland trading town with markets, banks and cafes. It is a useful place to stock up and to check cash before you head on to Kisoro and Mgahinga.
What about the depth?
You will hear that the lake is extraordinarily deep, with figures of hundreds of metres. Scientific sources give a much smaller depth, so we leave the claim out rather than repeat it. The scenery needs no exaggeration.
Plan your stay
Tell us the dates of your gorilla trek on the plan your trip page, and we will fit the lake into the route. Our Lake Bunyonyi destination page has quick facts.
