An ancient mountain forest in south-western Uganda, home to about half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas and the country's best-known trek.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park lives up to its name. Steep, mist-wrapped ridges are covered in thick forest that has stood for tens of thousands of years, and it shelters a remarkable share of the world's mountain gorillas. The Uganda Wildlife Authority counts about 459 gorillas here, roughly half of those remaining, and lists 25 habituated gorilla groups, with several open to visitors.
A gorilla trek is simple to describe and hard to forget. You meet your ranger guides at a trailhead, walk into the forest to find the family you have been assigned, and spend one hour in their company at close range. The walk can take from under an hour to most of a day, which is why fitness and good boots matter. Our guide to what a gorilla trekking day is really like walks through each step.
Permits are limited and are issued by UWA, so book early and choose your dates first. Prices are set by UWA in US dollars and change with the fiscal year, so always check the current tariff on the UWA website or let us price it for you. Our guide on how permits and costs fit together covers the rest of the budget.
Bwindi has four main tourism sectors. Buhoma and Ruhija sit in the north, and Rushaga and Nkuringo in the south. Which one suits you depends on where you are coming from and which gorilla family you are allocated. From Mbarara the road via Rukungiri reaches the northern sectors, and the road via Kabale and Kisoro leads to the southern ones, passing Lake Bunyonyi on the way.
Choosing a sector shapes the trip. Buhoma is the original tourism base and has the most visitor facilities. Ruhija sits higher and cooler and is excellent for forest birds. Rushaga and Nkuringo in the south offer long views and are closer to Kisoro and Lake Bunyonyi, and Rushaga has several habituated families. Tell us whether you value facilities, birding or scenery, and we will suggest a sector and a lodge to match.
Bwindi is also one of Africa's best forest birding sites, with more than 350 species and 23 Albertine Rift endemics, and local Batwa and Bakiga communities offer cultural visits. Compare it with Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in our guide to Uganda versus Rwanda gorilla trekking, and see our 3 day Bwindi gorilla trek from Mbarara.
One hour with a habituated gorilla family after a guided forest trek. Groups are small, rangers set the rules and permits are limited.
More than 350 species, including 23 Albertine Rift endemics, make Bwindi one of Africa's best forest birding areas. See our birding guide.
UWA lists performances, workshops and village walks with the Batwa and Bakiga communities. It is a respectful way to learn about the people of the forest.
Guided walks outside the trekking hours reveal butterflies, primates and forest plants, and are good rest-day activities.
Short walks through tea gardens and farms near Buhoma and Rushaga support local households.
The mountain roads are as memorable as the park, with terraced hills and long views.
You can trek gorillas all year because they live in the forest in every season. The drier months, roughly June to September and December to February, make steep trails firmer, and the park is busier then, so permits and rooms fill earlier. In the wetter months trails are muddy and views softer, but the forest is lush and often quieter. Read our full comparison in best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda.
From Mbarara the northern sector of Buhoma is roughly five to six hours by road via Rukungiri, with the last stretch on a rough road where a 4x4 is recommended. For Rushaga and Nkuringo, the road runs through Kabale and on toward Kisoro. UWA lists about 95 kilometres from Kabale to Buhoma via Ruhija and about 105 kilometres from Kabale to Nkuringo, each around four hours on murram roads. UWA also notes daily flights from Entebbe to Kisoro and Kihihi airstrips, taking about an hour and ten minutes. We plan the route in your quote and recommend two nights near the trailhead.
It is possible but very tiring. We recommend sleeping near the trailhead so you start rested, which is how our 3 day Bwindi gorilla trek is built.
A moderate level of fitness is enough, since you can hire porters and rangers set the pace. Trails are steep and slippery, so good boots help. Read what a trekking day is like.
UWA sets the minimum age at 15 for gorilla trekking, so younger children cannot join. For ideas for the rest of the family, see our guide to a Uganda safari with children.
One hour once you reach the group, with rangers guiding where to stand and keeping a respectful distance.
As early as your dates are fixed, particularly in the drier months. Permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (opens in a new tab) and are limited each day.
Bwindi has far more habituated families and more flexibility. Mgahinga is smaller and pairs gorillas with golden monkeys and volcano scenery. Our Uganda versus Rwanda guide compares them.
