Uganda's largest national park, where the Nile squeezes through a narrow gorge and thunders over Murchison Falls before slowing into hippo and shoebill country.
Murchison Falls National Park is where the Victoria Nile does something extraordinary. The river runs wide and slow across the plateau, then funnels into a gorge only about eight metres across and falls forty-five metres into a churning pool called the Devil's Cauldron. The falls mark the end of an eighty-kilometre stretch of rapids, according to the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
It is also Uganda's biggest and oldest protected area. North of the river, rolling savanna holds giraffes, elephants, buffalo, lions and thousands of Uganda kobs, and UWA counts 144 mammal species and 556 bird species in the park. The northern bank is the classic game drive country, reached by crossing the Nile on the ferry at Paraa.
The Nile itself is the highlight. A boat cruise upstream from Paraa goes to the base of the falls through banks lined with hippos, crocodiles and birds. A downstream cruise toward the Albert Delta is the best chance of a shoebill, the prehistoric-looking bird that birders travel across the world to see. Many guests do both on separate days. Our Murchison Falls and Paraa Lodge visitor's guide walks through a typical stay.
Distance shapes how you plan this park from Mbarara. The drive from Kampala to the southern gate is four to five hours, and it is further again from Mbarara, so we suggest treating Murchison as a dedicated trip of at least three nights or flying in from Entebbe. Our 4 day Murchison Falls safari with Paraa Lodge is designed that way.
Timing matters here more than in most parks. The ferry across the Nile at Paraa and the boat departures run to local schedules, so we confirm times when we plan your days and build game drives around them. Allow a full morning for the northern bank, take water and sun protection on the boat, and bring a rain layer for the spray if you walk to the top of the falls.
Murchison also pairs well with the east: Jinja and the source of the Nile lies on the road back toward Kampala, which lets you follow the same river from its source to its most dramatic falls. If you are weighing it against the western parks, our 3 day Queen Elizabeth wildlife safari covers the alternative.
The upstream launch from Paraa takes about three hours return. It passes hippo pods, crocodiles and elephants at the water's edge and ends below the falls.
The downstream route toward the Albert Delta is where birders look for the shoebill, along with other papyrus specialists. Early morning is best.
A trail leads to the viewpoint where the Nile squeezes through the gorge. Wear sturdy shoes, as the rocks are wet from spray.
Cross the ferry at Paraa for open savanna with giraffes, elephants, buffalo, lions and Uganda kobs. Morning and late afternoon drives give the best light.
With 556 species recorded, from bee-eaters and kingfishers to fish eagles and saddle-billed storks, the park is a major birding stop. See our Uganda birdwatching guide.
Add rafting or a source-of-the-Nile boat trip on the way back to Kampala. See Jinja.
The drier months, roughly December to February and June to August, are the best for game drives because grass is shorter and animals gather near the river. The wetter months, roughly March to May and September to November, bring green scenery and excellent birding but can make tracks slow, so plan generous drive times. Boat cruises operate in all seasons. See our month-by-month seasons guide to choose your window.
From Mbarara it is a long journey: first to Kampala, then north through Masindi to the southern gate, which UWA places about 305 kilometres from Kampala and four to five hours by road. Lodges are a further one to two hours from the gate. Chartered or scheduled flights run from Entebbe or Kajjansi to Pakuba airfield, the most convenient arrival point for the Paraa area. Many travellers either fly in or break the journey with a night in Kampala, and we can build the transfers into your quote on the plan your trip page.

Three nights is the minimum to fit the falls boat cruise, a game drive and a delta cruise without rushing. A fourth night adds time for birding or a trek elsewhere on the route.
UWA says shoebills are commonly spotted along the Albert Delta, which is reached by the downstream boat trip. Go early and ask for a guide who knows where birds have been seen recently.
It is a long day or two, so most guests fly or break the journey. We plan it as a standalone trip so you are not spending your holiday in the vehicle.
The upstream cruise gives you the falls and the big hippo pods. The downstream delta cruise gives you the shoebill and more birds. With two days you can do both.
Yes. Jinja lies on the road back to Kampala, so rafting or a source of the Nile trip makes a natural finish.
Park entry is set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (opens in a new tab) and is higher than at some smaller parks. Our safari cost breakdown explains how the total adds up.
