2 Day Lake Mburo Nature Walk Safari
Two days in Lake Mburo, close to Mbarara, built around a guided walk among zebras and antelope plus a game drive and a boat trip.
Price on request
Uganda's compact savanna park, under an hour from Mbarara, where you can walk, ride, cruise and drive among zebras, impalas and hippos.
Lake Mburo is the closest savanna park to Mbarara, which makes it the easiest wildlife day out in western Uganda. Acacia woodland, rocky ridges and open grassland roll down to a chain of lakes, and wetlands cover about a fifth of the park. That mix of habitats packs a surprising amount of life into a small area.
What sets Lake Mburo apart is how you can see it. The park has no elephants, and lions are not a feature of daily life here, so UWA allows guided walks among the animals. Walking beside zebras with a ranger who reads the tracks and the wind is a different experience from watching from a vehicle, and it is the reason many guests choose this park first. Our Lake Mburo nature walk guide explains how a walk works from the first briefing to the last bird call.
Zebras are the signature animal. UWA names Lake Mburo as one of the best places in Uganda to see them, and herds are easy to find on the open slopes. You will also meet impalas, which are rare elsewhere in the country, plus elands, topis, warthogs, buffalo and waterbucks. Hippos and crocodiles live in the lakes, and leopards and hyenas are present, though you are more likely to hear a hyena than to see one.
Rothschild's giraffes were moved here from Murchison Falls National Park in 2015, so the tall silhouettes you see against the evening sky are a conservation success story rather than a long-standing resident population. If giraffes are high on your wish list, ask us to plan an early game drive when they are most active.
Park rules are simple and worth knowing before you go. Stay with your ranger or guide, keep your voice low, never feed or approach animals, and keep to the tracks when driving. On a walk you move in single file and follow the ranger's signals. This respect for the animals is what keeps walking safaris possible.
A Lake Mburo bill is made of park entry, a ranger or guide fee for walks and a charge for boat trips, all published by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Because these figures change with the fiscal year, we quote the current numbers for your dates instead of printing them here. Our safari cost breakdown shows how the parts add up.
Lake Mburo works as a standalone short trip or as the first stop on a longer route. From here the road continues to Queen Elizabeth National Park, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Lake Bunyonyi. Our 2 day Lake Mburo nature walk safari is built around exactly that first-stop idea, and we can add a half day of Ankole culture in Mbarara before or after.
Walk with an armed ranger among zebras, impalas and other grazers, and learn to read tracks, dung and bird calls at ground level. Walks are slow, quiet and the best way to feel the park.
Drive the track network at sunrise or late afternoon for zebras, elands, topis, buffalo and, with luck, a leopard or a giraffe tower. Ask us whether a night drive is available when you travel, because it changes what you can see.
Glide along the shoreline past hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds. The boat puts you at eye level with fish eagles and kingfishers, and it is a gentle activity for all ages.
More than 315 species have been recorded, from savanna specialists to wetland birds. Read our Uganda birdwatching guide to see how the park fits a wider birding route.
Mihingo Lodge is known for riding safaris that bring you close to zebras and antelope at a calm pace. Riders need some experience, so tell us your level when you ask.
Guided cycling on park tracks suits active guests who want a quieter pace than a vehicle. Routes and availability depend on the rangers, so book ahead.
The park sits in cattle country. Pair it with a visit to an Ankole herder family near Mbarara, as in our Mbarara and Ankole cultural day tour.
Wildlife can be seen all year. The drier months, roughly June to August and December to February, draw animals toward the water, keep tracks firm and make walks more comfortable underfoot. The wetter months, roughly March to May and September to November, turn the park green, bring out the birds and give photographers dramatic skies, though some tracks can be muddy. Walks and drives are best in the first hours after sunrise and the last before sunset. For a month-by-month view across the whole country, read our Uganda seasons guide.
The park is east of Mbarara, on the highway toward Kampala, and the gates are under an hour away in normal traffic. Nshara Gate is a short drive off the main road, and Sanga Gate is the park's second entrance. UWA puts the park about 228 kilometres from Kampala, roughly three and a half hours by road. There are no scheduled flights, though a charter can reach the Mbarara airstrip from Entebbe in about an hour and a half. Our guide to getting from Entebbe to Mbarara covers the road in detail, and we can arrange the transfer in your quote.

A day trip from Mbarara works. One night is better because it lets you add an evening drive and a morning walk, which are the best hours. Two nights suits photographers and birders.
UWA states that the park has no elephants. Leopards and hyenas are present, but this is a park known for zebras, impalas, elands, topis and hippos rather than for big cats.
Yes, it is one of the most family-friendly parks in the country. Game drives and boat trips suit most ages, and rangers decide what is appropriate for guided walks. See our guide to a Uganda safari with children.
Park tracks can be rough after rain, so a safari vehicle with good clearance is the right choice. If you book with us, the vehicle is part of the plan.
Yes. Lake Mburo is on the road to Bwindi and Mgahinga, so it makes a good first stop. See our 7 day western Uganda route or our Bwindi gorilla trek.
Park entry and activity fees are set by UWA and are published on the UWA website (opens in a new tab). Tell us your dates and group size on the plan your trip page and we will price the whole trip for you.
